Wellness Library › Ayurveda & Ancient Healing
Ayurveda is the operating system underneath everything else in this wellness library. The doshas explain why a food, a drink or a moment of stillness lands differently depending on who you are and what your body needs right now.
Translated simply as "knowledge of life," Ayurveda — a Sanskrit term, Ayur = life, Veda = knowledge — is an ancient Indian holistic philosophy that shows how to live a healthy, wholesome and more fulfilled life by balancing your mind, body and spirit.
At the core of Ayurveda is you — the individual — and your unique set of physical, mental and spiritual characteristics, known as dosha in Ayurvedic practice. By understanding your dominant dosha, Ayurveda offers insight into which foods, herbs and lifestyle activities will enhance your life — and which won't — leaving you empowered to make choices that protect your physical health, your mental balance and your spiritual wellbeing.
Practised in India for probably the last 3,000 years, Ayurveda's wisdom has now spread across the planet — to this day it remains one of the world's most powerful mind-body-spirit health systems. At its heart is a profound respect for nature and a humble appreciation for the magic of life, showing how our health is connected to everyone and everything around us: our family, our work, our society, and our planet.
Because it is a holistic way of life, Ayurveda focuses on bringing balance to your physical, mental and spiritual health as you move through the seasons, the stages of your life, and the changing times of day — using herbal wisdom, dietary and lifestyle guidance to both prevent illness and optimise vitality. Yoga and meditation are often prescribed for relieving stress and rejuvenating mind, body and spirit.

"Or are we only beginning to understand what it observed thousands of years ago?"

"Ayur = Life. Veda = Knowledge. Together: a complete system of natural medicine originating in India over 5,000 years ago, now recognised by the World Health Organisation."

"Ayurveda takes into account our minds, bodies, interactions, food, energy and the natural world — making them part of five basic elements: Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space."
Ayurveda never used spices randomly. The seven dhatus — the body's tissues from plasma to reproductive tissue — each have a corresponding spice that supports their unique metabolic function. Your kitchen is already a pharmacy.

"Each spice supports a specific dhatu level of metabolism. The seven body tissues from plasma to reproductive tissue — each nourished by a spice already in your kitchen."
A combination of the five elements results in three doshas: Vata, Kapha and Pitta. Based on your dosha, there could be an imbalance causing physical or mental symptoms. Your dosha determines not only your health but your personality too.
